■黒人音楽は黒人の歴史と表裏一体
私は最初はジャズから入り、次にブルーズ、そして黒人音楽全般を好きになりました。好きな理由は最初はあくまで音楽的なものであり、特にリズムに私は惹かれていましたが、やがて
Say It Loud! A Celebration of Black Music in America [Box Set, Import, From US]
などで体系的に黒人音楽を聞くうちに、音楽と表裏一体である黒人の歴史 ―ここではそのまま「黒人」という表現を使います― を知るようになりました。
「自由の国アメリカ」で黒人が置かれていた立場というのは公民権運動以前ではそれはもうひどいものだったことは周知のことかと思いますたが、その状況を覆すべく立ち上がった公民権運動の市民（多くは黒人でしたが白人らもいました）の勇気・苦労はものすごいものでした。自宅に火炎瓶が投げ込まれ、人前で罵られ、さらには仲間であるはずの黒人からも「そんな必要はない」と言われました。
公民権運動について少しずつ知るにつれ、黒人音楽は私にとって特別な意味を持ち始めました。黒人音楽の多くは、人間の勇気と尊厳の表現です。
■最も印象的だった"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"
上の"Say It Loud!"の中でも最も印象的だった曲の一つが、Gil Scott-Heronによる"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"でした。黒人が、自らの尊厳を取り戻そうと活動しても、大手メディアがその活動を放送してくれやしない。"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"（革命がテレビ放映されることはない）とGil Scott-Heronは何度も何度も繰り返します。この作品は後々のラップというジャンルの誕生にもつながりました。
奇しくも先日金曜日（2011/05/27）、そのGil Scott-Heronは62歳で亡くなりました。
そうして彼の"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"という作品を改めて思い起こすと、実は、私たちには光が見えているのだと思えてきます。
■私たちは無力なのか？
現在の日本。日本の政財官マスメディアなどが、福島の人々を始めとした多くの被災者の苦しみを見てみぬふりをしようとしています（体制というのは放っておけばそうしがちです）。おとなしいとされる日本の人々も立ち上がり始め、声をあげています。あるいは次に近くの原発が暴発すれば自らの家族もあぶなくなると思い始めた人も声をあげはじめました。
その抵抗の中で、私たちは時に無力感を感じることがあります。しかし、今の私たちの苦労を、公民権運動の人々の苦難と比べることはできません。私たちははるかに恵まれています。
「記者クラブ」マスメディアは、体制よりであると言われ、それはかなりの程度正しい記述かと思いますが、しかしそれでも私たちが声を上げれば、マスメディアもその声を取り上げざるを得なくなっています。
Gil Scott-Heronの時代は"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"だったかもしれません。
しかし今の日本では（日本国憲法に基づく私たちの抵抗（注）を仮に"the revolution"と呼ぶなら）
"The Revolution Will Be Televised."
です。
仮にテレビカメラが来るのに時間がかかるとしても、
"The Revolution Is Tweeted."
です。
人間としての当然の尊厳が踏みにじられているとしたら、立ち上がって発言し、行動してください。それが自分のことであれ、他人のことであれ。
