マーク・ジョンソン著、菅野盾樹、中村雅之訳(1991/1987)『心の中の身体』紀伊国屋書店

ここではマーク・ジョンソン著、菅野盾樹、中村雅之訳(1991)『心の中の身体』(紀伊国屋書店)およびその原著であるMark Johnson (1987) The Body in the mind. (The University of Chicago Press)を私なりにまとめます。翻訳は大いに参考にさせていただきましたが、下に翻訳を示しているのは拙訳です。信頼できる翻訳については『心の中の身体』をご参照下さい。

1 はじめに

この本はもちろんMetaphors we live by.

THE OBJECTIVIST THEORY OF MEANING

1 意味とは、記号による表象(ことば、もしくは心的表象)と、(人間の心とは独立しているという意味で)客観的な実在との間の抽象的な関係である。
1. Meaning is an abstract relation between symbolic representations (either words or mental representations) and objective (i.e., mind-independent) reality.

2. 概念とは、一般的な心的表象(カント)、もしくは論理的存在物(フレーゲ)であると理解されている。
2. Concepts are understood as general mental representations (Kant) or as logical entities (Frege).

3. 概念は、例えばイメージがそれを経験するある特定の心との結びつきをもっているようには、特定の心と結びついておらず、その意味で「脱身体化」している。
3. Concepts are "disembodied" in the sense that they are not tied to the particular mind that experiences them in the way that, say, images are.

4. 意味の理論の課題とは、ナンセンスではない記号の連なりの有意味性を説明することである。
4. The task of a theory of meaning is to be able to explain the meaningfulness of any string of symbols that is not nonsense.

5. 意味の分析はそれがいかなるものであれ、究極的には字義通りの概念によってなされなければならない。最終的な分析において、それ以上の還元が不可能な隠喩的あるいは比喩的概念が残っていてはいけない。
5. Any analysis of meaning must be given ultimately in terms of literal concepts. There can be no irreducibly metaphorical or figurative concepts in the final analysis.

6. 客観主義者の意味論は、「神の目」の視点が存在するという認識論上の主張と整合的であるだけでなく、積極的にその主張をしていることを自覚することが重要である。この視点は、あらゆる人間の限界を超越し、普遍的に妥当な反省的立場を構成する。
6. It is important to notice that the Objectivist theory of meaning is compatible with, and supports, the epistemological claim that there exists a "God's-Eye" point of view, that is, a perspective that transcends all human limitation and constitutes a universally valid reflective stance.

(xxii-xxiii)

この意味理論に重なるようにして教条化されているのが、客観主義者的な合理性観です。

THE OBJECTIVIST VIEW OF RATIONALITY

1. 推論とは、規則にしたがって記号結合を操作することである。
1. Reasoning is a rule-governed manipulation of connections among symbols.

2. 合理性の中核は形式論理である。
2. The core of rationality is formal logic.

3. 客観主義者的な意味観と同様に、合理性はここでも本質的に脱身体化されたものである。合理性は、推論を行う人間の心の主観的過程とは独立した、まったく抽象的で論理的な関係と操作から構成されている。
3. As with the Objectivist view of meaning, so here, too, rationality is essentially diembodied; it consists of pure abstract logical relations and operations independent of subjective processes in the reasoner's mind.

4. 客観主義者による意味の説明と同じく、超越的合理性の観念も神の目の視点から知識を説明する認識論を支持している。
4. The idea of transcendent rationality also supports a God's-Eye-View account of knowledge, parallel to the version reinforced by the Objectivist account of meaning.

(xxiv-xxv)

ジョンソンはこうした客観主義的な意味観(そして合理性観)を批判し乗り越えようとします。

私が狙っているのは、語と文だけが意味をもち、かつ意味とは伝統的な意味で命題的なものでなければならないという想定を疑問視することである。確かに、言語的な意味が人間の志向性を精緻化すること、またその精緻化は命題と発語行為の複合的な構造がなければ不可能であるということに疑いはない。しかし、そうだからといって、すべての意味が命題的な性質しかもっていないということにはならない。

My strategy is to question the assumption that only words and sentences have meanings and that all of these meanings must be propositional in the traditional sense. There can be no doubt that linguistic meaning give rise to elaborations of human intentionality that would no be possible without the complex structure of propositions and speech acts; it does not follow from this, however, that all meaning is merely propositional in nature. (p. 2)

In this book I am going to explore some of the more important ways in which structures of our bodily experience work their way up into abstract meanings and patterns of inference. Special attention is devoted to imaginative structuring and projection, as they affect human meaning, understanding, and rationality. My argument begins by showing that human bodily movement, manipulation of objects, and perceptual interactions involve recurring patterns without which our experience would be chaotic and incomprehensible. I call these patterns "image schemata," because they function primarily as abstract structures of images. They are gestalt structures, consisting of parts standing in relations and organized into unified wholes, by means of which our experience manifests discernible order. When we seek to comprehend this order and to reason about it, such bodily based schemata play a central role. For although a given image schema may emerge first as a structure of bodily interactions, it can be figuratively developed and extended as a structure around which meaning is organized at more abstract levels of cognition. This figurative extension and elaboration typically takes the form of metaphorical projection from the realm of physical bodily interactions onto so-called rational processes, such as reflection and the drawing of inferences from premises. I shall try to show that what are often thought of as abstract meanings and inferential patterns actually do depend on schemata derived from our bodily experience and problem-solving. (xix-xx)

ジョンソン/カント的な意味での「イメージ図式」(image schema)とは「イメージの抽象的構造のように機能し、その働きによってこの再帰的に繰り返される同じ構造を出現させる広範囲の異なる経験を結びつける動的パターン」"a dynamic pattern that functions somewhat like the abstract structure of an image, and thereby connects up a vast range of different experiences that manifest this same recurring structure."

I am perfectly happy with the talk of the conceptual/propositional content of an utterance, but only insofar as we are aware that this propositional content is possible only by virtue of a complex web of nonpropositional schematic structures that emerge from our bodily experience. Once meaning is understood in this broader, enriched manner, it will become evident that the structure of rationality is much richer than any set of abstract logical patterns completely independent of the patterns of our physical interactions in and with our environment. (p. 5)

What makes this an identifiable image-schematic gestalt is its repeatable pattern -- a pattern that can therefore contribute to the regularity, coherence, and comprehensibility of our experience and understanding. To say that a gestalt is "experientially basic," then, is to say that it constitutes a recurring level of organized unity for an organism acting in its environment. Gestalts, in the sense I am using the term, are not unanalyzable givens or atomistic structures. They can be "analyzed" since they have parts and dimensions. But, any such attempted reduction will destroy the unity (the meaningful organization) that made the structure significant in the first place. (p. 62)

In sum, image schemata operate at a level of mental organization between abstract propositional structures, on the one side, and particular concrete images, on the other.
The view I am proposing is this: in order for us to to have meaningful, connected experiences that we can comprehend and reason about, there must be pattern and order to our actions, perceptions, and conceptions. A schema is a recurrent pattern, shape, and regularity in, or of, these ongoing ordering activities.. These patterns emerge as meaningful structures for us chiefly at the level of our bodily movements through space, our manipulation of objects, and our perceptual interactions.
It is important to recognize the dynamic character of image schemata. I conceive of them as structures for organizing our experience and comprehension. (p. 29)

Imagination is our capacity to organize mental representations (especially percepts, images, and image schemata) into meaningful, coherent unities. It thus includes our ability to generate novel order. (p. 140)

さらにジョンソンは私たちの認知での想像力の働きを適切に考察することにより私たちは、mind/body, reason/imagination, science/imagination, science/art, cognition/emotion, fact/valueなどの西洋的二分法を克服できるとします(p. 140)。

There were four related functions of imagination. As reproductive, it gives us unified representations (such as mental images and percepts) in time, and unified, coherent experiences over time, so that our experience is not random and chaotic. It allows us to grasp a series of perceptual inputs as connected, so that we experience objects that persist through time. (p. 165)

産出的機能により想像力は、私たちの意識の時間を通じての統合を生み出す。私の意識は構造をもっており、私が自覚(意識)できるすべての経験をその構造に押し込む。何かが私の経験の対象になるためには、その何かは私の意識の性質によって作られたある一定の条件を充たさなければならない。[意識の統合を] 組織化するこれらの条件が想像力の構造である。

As productive it constitutes the unity of our consciousness through time. My consciousness has a structure that it imposes on all experiences that I can be aware (conscious) of. For something to be an object of my experience, it must satisfy certain conditions established by the nature of my consciousness. These conditions of organization are structures of imagination. (p. 165)

図式化機能により想像力は抽象的概念と感覚内容をつなぎ、私たちが感覚知覚で受容するものを概念化することを可能にする。この結びつきが可能になるのは、想像力が形式的でありかつ身体化されている(つまり感覚につながっている)からである。イメージイメージもそれなりの構造を作り出すが、想像力は豊かなイメージよりも抽象的な組織化構造である。しかし想像力は抽象的概念でも命題でもない。

As a schematizing function, imagination mediates between abstract concepts and the contents of sensation, making it possible for us to conceptualize what we receive through sense perception. Imagination can make this connection because it is both formal and embodied (i.e., tied to sensation). It is a more abstract organizing structure than rich images (it generates their structure), yet it is not an abstract concept or proposition. (p. 165)

最後に、創造的機能として、想像力は自由で規則に支配されていない活動であり、この働きにより私たちは経験において新しい構造を手に入れることができ、既存のパターンを作り変えて新しい意味を生成できる。この創造的な構造化は、記号提示および隠喩的投射によって生じる。この構造化は、意味・理解・言語の私たちのシステムすべてを通じて作動している。さらに、創造的想像力は、概念や規則で決定されない限りにおいて、非アルゴリズム的であり非命題的である。

Finally, as creative, imagination is a free, non-rule-governed activity by which we achieve new structure in our experience and can remold existing patterns to generate novel meaning. This creative structuring occurs as symbolic presentation and as metaphorical projection. It operates throughout our entire system of meaning, understanding, and language. Moreover, creative imagination is nonalgorithmic and nonpropositonal, insofar as it is not a process determined by concepts or rules.

A crucial point here is that understanding is not only a matter of reflection, using finitary propositions, on some preexistent, already determinate experience. Rather, understanding is the way we "have a world," the way we experience our world as a comprehensible reality. Such understanding, therefore, involves our whole being -- our bodily capacities and skills, our values, our moods and attitudes, our entire cultural tradition, the way in which we are bound up with a linguistic community, our aesthetic sensibilities, and so forth. In short, our understanding is our mode of "being in the world." It is the way we are meaningfully situated in our world through our bodily interactions, our cultural institutions, our linguistic tradition, and our historical context. Our more abstract reflective acts of understanding (which may involve grasping of finitary propositions) are simply an extension of our understanding in this more basic sense of "having a world." (p. 102)

3.2.2 推論

推論 (reasoning)などは、客観主義的な前提(典型的には、身体論が登場する前の古典的な認知科学)では、まさに形式論理学的な命題の演算と考えられていましたが、私たちが実際の生活でおこなっている推論は、ただ命題的だけでなく、イメージ図式の隠喩的投射を伴う想像力に満ちたものです。ジョンソンは、セリエが、それまでのTHE BODY AS A MACHINEという隠喩に換えて

For the non-Objectivist, meaning is always a matter of human understanding, which constitutes our experience of a common world that we can make some sense of. A theory of meaning is a theory of understanding. And understanding involves image schemata and their metaphorical projections, as well as propositions. These embodied and imaginative structures of meaning have been shown to be shared, public, and "objective" in an appropriate sense of objectivity.

This particular formulation of the relevant notion of understanding, as a way of "being in" or "having" a world, highlights the dynamic, interactive character of understanding (and meaning). Grasping a meaning is an event of understanding. Meaning is not merely a fixed relation between sentences and objective reality, as Objectivism would have it. What we typically regard as fixed meaning are merely sedimented or stabilized structures that emerge as recurring patterns in our understanding. The idea that understanding is an event in which one has a world, or, more properly, a series of ongoing related meaning events in which one's world stands forth, has long been recognized on the Continent, especially in the work of Heidegger and Gadamer. But Anglo-American analytic philosophy has steadfastly resisted this orientation in favor of meaning as a fixed relation between words and the world. It has been mistakenly assumed that only a viewpoint that transcends human embodiment, cultural embeddedness, imaginative understanding, and location within historically evolving traditions can guarantee the possibility of objectivity. (p. 175)

こうして英米分析哲学およびその影響を受ける客観主義的諸学問が前提としている意味論を批判的に超克すると、意味論における「意味」を言語的(命題的)意味だけに限定する必要もなくなります。近代的言語学の意味論では、客観主義に従い、例えば"Smoke means fire", "Life means nothing", "She means to leave", "The Revolutionary War means a lot to Americans."などはすべて意味論が取り扱わないものとし、"The word 'triangle' means a three-sided closed plane figure."

This "being in the touch with reality" is all the realism we need. Our realism consists in our sense that we are in touch with reality in our bodily actions in the world, and in our having an understanding of reality sufficient to allow us to function more or less successfully in that world. Our understanding is our way of being situated in our world, and it is our embodied understanding that manifests our realist commitments. (pp. 203-204)

3.2.5 認識論

こうなると「何が知識なのか」という認識論 (epistemology)も当然に変わります。以下は抜粋引用です。

1. 客観的知識に関する適切な見解とは、人間に関する見解であり、神の視点からのみ得られる絶対的な神の目からの知識の見解ではない。
1. It [=an adequate view of objective knowledge] wold be a view of human knowledge and not one of absolute, God's-Eye knowledge that could only be accessible from God's point of view.

2. すべての知識は理解によってつながっている。知識を得るということは、あるやり方、つまりは理解の共同体にあなたとともに参加する他者と共有できるやり方で理解することである。
2. All knowledge is mediated by understanding. To know is to understand in a certain manner, a manner which can be shared by others who join with you to form a community of understanding.

3. 理解を共有することは単に概念や命題を共有することではない。理解とは理解の身体化された構造の問題でもある。理解の身体化された構造には例えばイメージ図式があるが、これは私たちが経験で「形式」そのものとしていることの大部分を構成している。
3. Shared understanding is not merely a matter of shared concepts and propositions. It is also a matter of embodied structures of understanding, such as image schemata, which constitute a large part of what we mean by form itself in our experience. (p. 206)

4. しかし生命体とその環境を二つのまったく独立し無関係の存在物として考えることは誤りである。自らの環境を離れて生命体が生命体として存在することはない。生命体にとって環境全体は、生命体の「内部」にあるものと同じように、生命体のアイデンティティの一部である。
4. It is a mistake, however, to think of an organism and its environment as two entirely independent and unrelated entities; the organism does not exist as an organism apart from its environment. The environment as a whole is as much a part of the identity of the organism as anything "internal" to the organism.

5. 私たちは進化の過程で環境に適合し環境を変えてもきた生命体である。私たちは生き残るという必要性および私たちの経験の質を高めるという目的に適うようになんとかうまく機能するやり方を進化させてきた。
5. We are organisms that have adapted to and transformed our environments in the course of our evolution. We have evolved ways of functioning that are more or less successful given our purposes and needs, both for our survival and for enhancing the quality of our experience. (p. 207)

6. したがって、私たちの概念システムは二つのレベルで、私たちにとってもっとも関連性の高い経験に組み込まれている。(a)基本レベルと(b)イメージ図式レベルの二つである。(注3)
6. Thus, our conceptual system is "plugged into" our most relevant experiences very accurately at two levels: (a) the basic level and (b) the image-schematic level. (p. 208)

Objectivity consists, then, in taking up an appropriate publicly shared understanding or point of view. This involves rising above our personal prejudices, idiosyncratic view, and subjective representations. On the account I have sketched, objectivity is thus made possible by the public nature of image-schematic and basic-level structures of understanding, and the metaphoric and metonymic projections based upon them. Objectivity does not require taking up God's perspective, which is impossible; rather, it requires taking appropriately shared human perspectives that are tied to reality through our embodied imaginative understanding. (p. 212)

DigitalCast

以下は、サイトの自己紹介です。

デジタルキャストは、英語字幕と日本語字幕の同時表示可能なオリジナル動画プレーヤーを使って、リピーティングやシャドーイング、サイトトランスレーション、ディクテーションといった様々な学習方法を、効果的に行える新しい形の英語学習サイトです。科学やニュースなどの英語動画では、最新のキーワードや専門用語も身に付けることができます。

http://digitalcast.jp/about/

著者は、古典的カテゴリー (classical categories)などの伝統的見解を、人間の精神の所産 (a product of the human mind) として高く評価しています (p. 160)。

On the traditional view, reason is abstract and disembodied. On the new view, reason has a bodily basis. The traditonal view sees reason as litral, as primarily about propositions that can be objectively either true or false. The new view takes imaginative aspects of reason -- metaphor, metonymy, and mental imagery -- as central to reason, rather than as a peripheral and inconsequential adjunct to the literal. (xi)

- a commitment to the existence of a real world, both external to human beings and including the reality of human experience
- a link of some sort between conceptual systems and other aspects of reality
- a conception of truth that is not merely based on internal coherence
- a commitment to the existence of stable knowledge of the external world
- a rejection of the view that "anything goes" -- that any conceptual system is as good as any other (p. 158)

それでは以下、伝統的見解である客観主義 (objectivism) と、新しい見解である経験基盤主義 (experientialism) をまとめます。

2 客観主義 (objectivism)

客観主義のパラダイムは、形而上学と認識論の二つに分けて説明することができます (p. 159)。

2.1 客観主義者的形而上学

客観主義者の形而上学は、次のように説明されています。

客観主義者的形而上学: 現実のすべてはモノから構成されており、モノは常に一定の特性と関係性を有している。

OBJECTIVIST METAPHYSICS: All of reality consists of entities, which have fixed properties and relations holding among them at any instant. (p. 160)

客観主義者的形而上学は、本質主義 (essentialism) と重なる考えですが、それらから生まれてくるのが、古典的カテゴリー化 (classical categorization) の考え方であり、それはさらに、以下の考え方につながります。

客観的カテゴリー説: 世界にあるモノは、それぞれの客観的特性に基づいた、客観的に存在するカテゴリーを形成する。

THE DOCTRINE OF OBJECTIVE CATEGORIES: The entities in the world form objectively existing categories based on their shared objective properties. (p. 161)

さらに、これらの特性は、究極的にはそれ以上分割できない単純で原子的なものに分析できます。

現実世界の原子論: すべての特性は、原子的であるか、もしくは原子的特性が論理的に結合された特性である。

REAL-WORLD ATOMISM: All properties either are atomic or consist of logical combinations of atomic properties. (p. 162)

それぞれ固有の特性を客観的なカテゴリーとしている「モノ」は、お互いに客観的で論理的に関係しあっています。

客観主義者的論理: 世界にあるすべてのカテゴリーの間には論理的な関係が客観的に存在している。

OBJECTIVIST LOGIC: Logical relations exist objectively among the categories of the world. (p. 162)

In mathematical logic, Hilbert's version of the axiomatic method is applied to logic itself. A deductive logical system consists of a collection of uninterpreted symbols, formation rules that combine these into well-formed formulas, and transformation rules that permit certain strings of symbols to be substituted for other strings of symbols. A finite number of well-formed formulas are taken as axioms. Theorems are derived from axioms by transformation rules. A proof is just a sequence of strings of symbols. The symbols in such a deductive systems are, technically, completely meaningless. Such a system of formation rules and rules of transformation is called a formal "syntax."
"Semantics" is a technical way to "give meaning" to the uninterpreted symbols of the "syntax." (p. 222)

以上の説明は、そのままチョムスキーの言語学の考え方に当てはまります。

生成言語学が定義する言語とは、適切に制限された産出規則により生成された未解釈記号列の集合である (チョムスキー 1957を参照せよ)。 したがって、生成言語学での統語論規則は、定義上、意味論からは独立している。意味論は、これも定義上、解釈的なものであり、意味論が統語論の未解釈記号に意味を与えるのである。

Generative linguistics defines a language as a set of strings of uniterpreted symbols, generated by some appropriately restricted version of production rules (see Chomsky 1957). Rules of syntax within generative linguistics are thus, by definition, independent of semantics. Semantics is, by definition, interpretive; that is, it gives meaning to the uninterpreted symbols of the syntax. (p. 227)

As we have seen, such a "definition" of grammar as a kind of system of production rules and a language as a set of strings of symbols generated by that system is not a consequence of mathematical logic. It is not merely a value-free application of mathematics to natural language. It is the imposition of a metaphor -- a metaphor based on objectivist philosophy. It characterizes a commitment to try to understand natural language in terms of such systems. The autonomy of syntax -- the independence of sysntax from semantics -- is a consequence of that metaphor. If you accept the metaphor, then it is true by definition (metaphorical definition!) that natural language syntax is independent of semantics, but not conversely. (pp. 227-228)

OBJECTIVIST COGNITION: Thought is the manipulation of abstract symbols. Symbols get their meaning via correspondences to entities and categories in the world. In this way, the mind can represent external reality and be said to "mirror nature."

OBJECTIVE CONCEPTS: Concepts are symbols that (a) stand in a relation to other concepts in a conceptual system and (b) stand in correspondence to entities and categories in the real world (or possible worlds). (p. 163)

こういった認識論に基づくと、合理性 (rationality) とは以下のように規定されます。

客観主義者的合理性: 人間の理性が正しいのは、それが客観主義者的論理に適うときである。つまり思考で使われた記号が世界のモノとカテゴリーに正しく対応し、心が世界のモノとカテゴリーの間に存在する論理的な関係を再生するときである。

OBJECTIVIST RATIONALITY: Human reason is accurate when it matches objectivist logic, that is, when the symbols used in thought correctly correspond to entities and categories in the world and when the mind reproduces the logical relations that exist objectively among the entities and categories of entities in the world. (p. 163)

こういった考え方では、「事実」とは、いかなる人間のあり方・営みとも独立に存在しているものであると想定されます。

独立性の想定:存在と事実は、人間の信念、知識、知覚、理解の様態、およびその他すべての認知的能力から独立している。真なる事実が、人間の信念、知識、概念化、およびその他すべての認知に依拠していることはあってはならない。存在はいかなる点においても人間の認知には依拠していない。

THE INDEPENDENCE ASSUMPTION: Existence and fact are independent of belief, knowledge, perception, modes of understanding, and every other aspect of human cognitvie capacities. No true fact can depend upon people's believing it, on their knoweldge of it, on their conceptualization of it, or on any other aspect of cogntion. Existence cannot depend in any way on human cognition. (p.164)

Paulo Freire (1970) Pedagogy of the Opressed"をご覧いただければ幸いです。

こういった認識論からは、次のような意味論が生じます。ことばが「意味をもつ」ことは、もっぱら次のような考え方に基づくです。

客観主義者的意味論: 言語表現は、現実世界もしくは可能世界と対応することもしくは対応し損なうことによってのみ、意味を得ることができる。つまり、名詞句の場合は正しい指示ができていること、文の場合は真か偽であることによって、意味が得られるのである。

OBJECTIVIST SEMANTICS: Linguistic expressions get their meaning only via their capacity to correspond, or failure to correspond, to the real world or some possible world; that is, they are capable of referring correctly (say, in the case of noun phrases) or of being true or false (in the case of sentences). (p. 167)

The study of how senteces are used and what speakers mean by what they say is segregated off as "pragmatics." Semantics is by definition independent of pragmatics, since semantic meaning is defined in terms of fixed truth conditions independent of the use of a sentence by any speaker.

The semantics-pragmatics distincition introduces an all-important set of values into the study of maning. Semantics is given a central role, because it specifies connections between language and the objective world. Pragmatics is taken to be peripheral, and of secondary interest, since it is not concerned with anything having to do with objective reality, but "mearely" with human communication. (p. 171)

Generative linguistics (in the Chomskyan tradition) takes for granted that there is an autonomous language faculty that makes no use at all of general cognitive capacities. This is not an idle assumption on the part of generative linguistics. It is an assumption that is necessary in order to maintain the basic metaphor on which generative linguistics is based, namely, A GRAMMAR IS A FORMAL SYSTEM. A formal system is a collection of rewriting rules that can mimic an algorithmic computation. The theory of generative linguistics is mathematically characterized in terms of such algorithmic systems, which manipulate symbols without regard to their meaning. By definition, an algorithmic system is one in which no algorithm can be sensitive to the way a symbol is semantically interpreted. If a generative grammar is such a system, then it is by definition required that no interpretation of the symbols -- no meaning, no understanding of them -- can be made use of in any rule of grammar. To do so would be to abandon the theory of generative linguistics -- to give up on the basic metaphor that a grammar is a formal system in the technical sense. (pp. 181-182)

- It [= the biological species] does not have a homogeneous internal structure.

- It is defined relative to other groups.

- It is not defined solely with respect to properties of individuals.

- It does not have clear boundaries.

- It is not transitive.

- It does not have necessary conditons.

- It is dependent on geograpy. (p. 235)

Wavelengths of light exist in a world external to human beings; color categories do not. The fact that we categorize different wavelengths as being in the same color category partly depends on human physiology -- on the cones in the retina and the neural pathways between the eye and the brain. Colors arise from our interaction with th world; they do not exist outside of us. Color categorization is also partly a matter of cultural convention since different cultures have different boundaries for basic color categories. Color categorization also involves cognitive mechanisms, which are needed to account for the existence of focal nonprimary colors, like orange. Thus colors are categories of mind that do not exist objectively in the world exclusive of seeing beings. (p. 198)

また、新聞によって「事実」として報道される内容にも、人間の認知が入っています。例えば1984年11月14日のSan Francisco Chronicleは、"Employees across the nation this year will steal $150 billion worth of time from their jobs"や"The study showed that the average weekly time theft figure per employee amounted to four hours and 22 minutes."

Perception: Overall perceived shape; single mental image; fast identification.

Function: General motor program.

Communication: Shortest, most commonly used and contextually neutral words, first learned by children and first enter the lexicon.

Knowledge Organizaition: Most attributes of category members are stored at this level.

これらの基本レベルの概念そして語は、人間の営みに密接に関連しています。すなわち私たちの身体、習慣・慣習、価値などの特性によってこれらが定まっています。これは厳密な客観主義では想定できないレベルです。

3.2 イメージ・スキーマ概念 (image-schematic concepts)

イメージ・スキーマ概念 (image-schematic concepts)について、レイコフは、ジョンソンのThe Body in the Mind: The Bodily Basis of Meaning, Imagination, and Reasonの議論を次のように集約してまとめます。

- イメージ・スキーマが、私たちの経験を、概念形成に先立って構造化する。

- イメージ・スキーマに対応するイメージ・スキーマ概念が存在する。

- イメージ・スキーマの基本的論理をたもったまま、イメージ・スキーマを抽象的領域に写像するメタファーが存在する。

- それらのメタファーは恣意的ではなく、私たちの日常的な身体的経験によって導かれている。

- Image schemas structure our experience preconceptually.

- Corresponding image-schematic concepts exist.

- There are metaphors mapping image schemas into abstract domains, preserving their basic logic.

- The metaphors are not arbitrary but are themselves motivated by structures inhering in everyday bodily experience. (p. 275)

このイメージ・スキーマ(あるいは運動感覚的イメージ・スキーマ (kinethetic image schemas) (p. 271) の例としてあげられているのは、「容器スキーマ」 (The CONTAINER Schema)(p. 272)、「部分-全体スキーマ」 (The PART-WHOLE Schema) (p. 273)、「連結スキーマ」 (The LINK Schema) (p. 274)、「中心-周縁スキーマ」 (The CENTER-PERIPHERY Schema) (p. 274)、「起点-経路-到達点スキーマ」 (The SOURCE-PATH-GOAL Schema) (p. 275)、「上下スキーマ」(UP-DOWN Schema)(p. 275)、「前後スキーマ」(FRONT-BACK Schema)(p. 275)、「線形順序スキーマ」(LINEAR ORDER)(p. 275)などですが、これらはまだ研究途上のものであるとしています(p. 275)。

3.3 経験基盤主義の帰結

基本レベルとイメージ・スキーマ概念は二重の基盤(dual foundation)として、私たちにとって「直接的に有意味」(directly meaningful) ですが、この私たちの概念システム (conceptual system)には、客観主義が想定している「原子記号」(primitives)は存在しません。(p. 279) なぜなら原子記号は、客観主義により内部構造をもたない(The concepts with no internal structure are primitive. p. 279) とされていますが、基本レベルとイメージ・スキーマ概念にはそれぞれ内部構造があるからです。

経験基盤主義により「意味」は新たな定義を得ます。

意味とはモノではない。意味は私たちにとって有意味だということに伴っている。それ自身で有意味なものは何もない。有意味性は、ある種類の存在者がある種類の環境の中で機能するという経験の中から生じる。

Meaning is not a thing; it involves what is meaningful to us. Nothing is meaningful in itself. Meaningfulness derives from the experience of functioning as a being of a certain sort in an environment of a certain sort. (p. 292)

「真理」についても刷新され、私たちの暮らしに根ざしたものになります。

ある状況でのある言明を私たちが「真」とするのは、その言明に関する私たちの理解が、私たちの目的に沿ったその状況の理解にふさわしい場合である。

これが経験基盤者による真理の説明の基盤である。これは絶対的な、神の視点からの真理ではない。だがこれを私たちは日常的に真とみなしているのである。

We understand a statement as being true in a given situation if our understanding of the statement fits our understanding of the situation closely enough for our purposes.

That is the basis of an experiantialist account of truth. It is not absolute, God's eye view of truth. But it is what we ordinarily take truth to be. (p. 294)

Within the objectivist tradition, objectivity meant eliminating any aspects of the subjective so as to better see things from an objective, God's eye point of view. But the fact that a God's eye view is not possible does not mean that objectivity is impossible or any less a virtue. Objectivity consists in two things:

First, putting aside one's own point of view and looking at a situation from other points of view -- as many others as possible.

Second, being able to distinguish what is directly meaningful -- basic level and image-schematic concepts -- from concetps that are indirectly meaningful.

Being objective therefore requires:

- knowing that one has a point of view, not merely a set of beliefs but a specific conceptual system in which beliefs are framed

- knowieng what one's point of view is, including what one's conceptual system is like

- knowing other relevant points of view and being able to use the conceptual systems in which they are framed

- being able to assess a situation from other points of view, using other conceptual systems

- being able to distinguish concepts that are relatively stable and well-defined, given the gneral nature of the human organisim and our environment (e.g., basic-level and image-schema concepts), from those concepts that vary with human purposes and modes of indirect understanding (p. 301)

これらの論考により、私たちはまた「西洋近代」の特徴をより「客観的」に理解できるのではないでしょうか。私たちは西洋近代の発想に拘束されることなく、また逆にそれを拒絶することなく、物事を考えてゆきたいと思います。
